Learn why choosing PFAS-free fabric for your yoga clothing is important for your health and our 5 favorite alternatives made from organic cotton.
You've probably spent a lot of time perfecting your warrior pose and maybe even more time picking out the perfect comfortable yet stylish leggings for your fitness classes and yoga sessions. But in light of recent information, you'll want to look at those tags a little closer! We were shocked that many popular athleisure wear companies, including some of our longtime favorites, contain PFAS, which are harmful to human health. PFAS are forever chemicals that can be absorbed through the skin and are associated with thyroid disease, infertility, cancer, liver damage, and asthma.
Mamavation recently did an in-depth study of 32 brands of leggings and yoga pants to determine whether or not each brand of leggings tested positive for the presence of PFAS. You can read more about their study and the findings here. We think you'll be just as surprised as we were.

While we know that PFAS can be absorbed transdermally, just how much remains to be determined. Scientists are confident that you are likely absorbing at least some of these dangerous chemicals through your skin, though. So to err on the side of safety, here are a few reasons you may want to strongly consider switching out your yoga pants and other activewear for options made with organic cotton and other natural fibers that don't contain PFAS.
- Yoga pants are tight. Because these leggings are designed to fit right up against your skin, you're more likely to absorb these health-harming chemicals through direct skin contact.
- You likely sweat in them- a lot. When you sweat, your pores open, and your body is more prone to absorbing these forever chemicals.
- Yoga pants are comfortable. They are so comfortable that many of us wear them every chance we get. Out to brunch, lounging, sleeping, meaning you're probably spending much of your life in these pants outside of your yoga practice, leading to increased exposure.
But armed with this new information doesn't mean you need to swear off your beloved yoga pants forever. We’ve compiled a list of our 5 favorite PFAS-free organic cotton yoga pants. These leggings are so comfortable we promise you won’t even miss your old pairs.
PFAS- What Are They and Why Are They In Our Clothes?
Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS)
PFAS is an abbreviation for per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances, which are large, complex groups of synthetic chemicals found in many consumer products like clothing, furniture, adhesives, food packaging, heat-resistant non-stick cooking pans, and electrical wires. Generally, these chemicals are used to make products resistant to heat, oil, stains, grease, and water.
What Are PFAS Doing In Our Clothes?
Activewear companies have relied on PFAS and similar toxic chemicals to bring sweat-wicking, stain-resistance, and water-resistance to their quick-drying fabrics. However, the good news is that several states have already begun adopting restrictions on PFAS in textiles, with California banning PFAS in almost all textiles by 2025 and New York restricting them in all apparel.
Similarly, many yoga mats are often made using toxic materials like PVC that can be absorbed through the skin and into our system as we flow through downward dog. Substances found in many yoga mats have been linked to endocrine disruption, respiratory irritation, and other adverse health effects.
Health and Environmental Impacts of PFAS
PFAS are comprised of carbon and fluorine atoms linked together. Because the carbon-fluorine bond is one of the strongest created, these chemicals do not break down over time, unlike many other hazardous substances we come into contact with. In fact, because PFAS remain in the environment for such a long time, scientists can't even estimate their environmental half-life.
Why Organic Cotton Yoga Pants Are A Healthier Choice
Choosing organic yoga pants made with organic cotton and other natural fibers will ensure you can avoid PFAS and other health-harming chemicals altogether. Organic cotton is a more durable, environmentally friendly, and all-around more sustainable choice. And even more, organic yoga clothing is breathable, perfect for keeping you cool and comfortable, which is essential for any type of workout.

Understanding Labels and Certifications- What to Look For When Shopping for Yoga Pants
When it comes to shopping for yoga pants made with natural organic materials, there are a few key factors to consider.
Opt for clothing made of 100% organic materials when possible: It's essential to prioritize garments made from natural materials. Look for yoga pants that are made entirely from organic fibers, as this ensures they are free from harmful chemicals.
Look for organic cotton: Organic cotton is a fantastic choice for yoga pants. Organic cotton yoga pants are breathable, soft, and durable. However, be cautious of misleading marketing terms like "natural cotton," as this really doesn't mean anything. Conventional cotton is often treated with pesticides, so look specifically for certified organic cotton.
Organic hemp is another great alternative: Hemp fabric is known for its strength and durability, which means it can maintain its shape and integrity for a longer period of time compared to cotton.
Opt for quality over quantity: When shopping for yoga pants, prioritize quality over quantity. Look for clothing that is made to last. Investing in high-quality, durable yoga pants may cost more initially, but it will save you money in the long run as you won't need to replace them as frequently.
Look for clothing certifications: Keep an eye out for clothing certifications that ensure the organic and sustainable nature of the garment. The GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certification is one of the best to look for. GOTS-certified organic clothing contains at least 95% certified organic fibers, guaranteeing its environmental and social standards.
Opt for dye-free clothing when possible: To minimize your exposure to potentially harmful chemicals, consider choosing dye-free yoga pants. While dyed clothing can still be organic, opting for undyed options reduces the chances of any residual dyes coming into contact with your skin.
Avoid screen or plastic printing: When selecting yoga pants, refrain from buying garments with screen or plastic printing on them. These prints can often contain chemicals and additives that may not be skin-friendly or environmentally friendly.
Pay attention to any strong smells: If you notice a strong odor from a piece of clothing, it's best to avoid purchasing it. Strong smells can indicate the presence of chemicals or synthetic materials.
Wash all activewear before wearing: Before you wear your newly purchased yoga pants, always remember to wash them. This step helps eliminate any residual chemicals present in the fabric and reduces your exposure to potential irritants.
Avoid toxic laundry products: Lastly, choose a non-toxic laundry detergent to wash your yoga pants and other activewear. Toxic laundry detergents can leave residues on your clothes and affect both your health and the environment.
This post was all about choosing the best organic cotton yoga pants.
With recent information about the presence of PFAS in many popular athleisure wear brands, it's essential to prioritize PFAS-free options.
PFAS are harmful chemicals that can be absorbed through the skin and have been linked to various human health issues. By choosing yoga pants made with organic cotton and other natural fibers, you can avoid exposing yourself to these dangerous substances.
Remember to try and opt for organic yoga clothing made of 100% organic materials, like organic cotton, whenever possible. Look for certifications such as GOTS to ensure the organic and sustainable nature of the garment. Avoid dye-free options, as they minimize your exposure to potential chemicals.
