What are some signs and symptoms that you might be low on vitamin D?
1) Bumpy skin- keratosis pilaris, commonly referred to as KP or chicken skin, is a condition that often appears on the backs of your arms and thighs and sometimes cheeks
2) Scaly skin- if you suffer from dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis, this may be a sign that you are deficient in vitamin D
3) You’re sick often- if you find you quickly become sick, especially with colds or the flu, low vitamin D levels may be a contributing factor
4) Your muscles are exceptionally sore or experiencing frequent muscle spasms. Vitamin D deficiency can cause slow muscle recovery, muscle aches, weakness, and even bone pain
5) You’re exhausted if you are stressed, depressed, or experiencing insomnia. Any of these symptoms could be related to not having enough vitamin D
So what next? As with any health concern, talk to your doctor if you suspect you have vitamin D deficiency. They will likely order a blood test. Two types of tests might be ordered, but the most common is 5-hydroxyvitamin D, known as 25(OH)D for short. Based on your test results, they will likely prescribe some sort of Vitamin D supplementation.
